THE annual primary schools tag rugby tournament run by York City Knights is underway, with two heats played and two to come next week.

The Year 6 festival is one of the largest of its kind, involving four heats featuring primary schools from all over the region, and comes on the back of the free rugby coaching delivered by the Knights’ community development team.

This team includes star player Chris Thorman, who also is helping to referee at the matches.

The schools who qualify through the heats will go on to play in the York Tag Finals day, which will be held as a curtain-raiser to the Championship One game between the Knights and Rochdale Hornets at Huntington stadium on Sunday, April 25.

The winner of that will go on to represent their school and area at the North Yorkshire Youth Games this summer.

The tournament has been open to every school within the greater York district. The two remaining heats are at Huntington School on Monday and York High on Tuesday.
