Half-backs Sam Young and Shay North were in fantastic form as Heworth ARLFC Under-10s beat Townville 28-18.

North and Young controlled the play and were backed up well by ‘team player’ Henri Grimbley.

Josh Rogerson worked overtime in defence and opened the scoring with a 40-metre sprint, while North scored a fine solo try, and slick passing brought Kieren Kostanzo his first of the season.

The tighter second half saw Cain North, Jamie Morrison and Leon Beattie put in huge efforts. Young side-stepped in, and North scored his second.

Debutant Kian Oliver scored a great solo try in Heworth U8s’ six tries to nil conquest of Townville.

Man-of-the-match Matthew Dolling was to the fore in the tackles, supported by most improved player Will Spencer.

The ‘magic moment’ award went to Callum Rutland for his solo try. Alex Bell, Jak Ostergaard, Jensen Brown and Leon Mooring also crossed.

Dane Larkin and Adam Lovett scored 32 of Heworth U14s’ points in a fine 34-4 win over Crigglestone.

Man-of-the-match Lovett scored a first-half hat-trick and a second-half brace for 20 points, while captain Larkin ran half the length of the pitch for a late try to add to his four conversions. Lewis Holmes goaled the last try.

Scrum-half Baxter Hackett directed play well and full-back Lewis Holmes worked hard, while Larkin led the line and centre Joe Moore regularly made ground. Debutants Michael and Connor Hinds and Oliver Radford all shone.

Heworth U15s lost prop Peter Clarke (shoulder) seconds into the match and playmaker Josh Poulter (hamstring) soon followed – but they still beat a physical Castleford Panthers 20-16 thanks to a thrilling late winner.

Jordan Potter got an early score before sending a pinpoint cross-field kick for Harry Deighton to touch down.

Cas took the game to Heworth in the second half and, although good defence from Flannan Naismith, Alex Clough, Deighton and Elliot Bulmer held them at bay, they did equalise at 16-16, Jack Steward having also crossed for Heworth.

Deighton sliced a drop-goal attempt to add to his two excellent touchline conversions, but, in one last attack, man-of-the-match Potter drew in four defenders before a quick play-the-ball saw Bill Legg accelerate in.
