BOXER Matt Doyle put in an accomplished display in front of a partisan crowd to notch his second professional win.

The Heworth fighter took an easy 59-56 points victory over Afghan-born Monsoor Walli at Sheffield’s Don Valley Stadium in six two-minute rounds, and it was a display which left his York trainer Glen Banks purring.

Normally a welterweight, 24-year-old Doyle had to meet Walli at light-middleweight but was always in control during his second contest as a pro fighter.

Walli had recorded one win and one loss in his two fights before meeting Doyle.

Doyle said: “It was a good win. I lost a couple of rounds, but he fought hard to win them.

“It was good to get another fight under my belt. I feel more confident. It’s exciting and I’m really enjoying it.

“I had really good support there. They made a lot of noise and I would like to thank everybody who went along. It meant a lot to me.”

Banks added: “The fight was a walk-over for him. I was very pleased with his performance. He put his head in his opponent’s chest, walked him back to the ropes and banged away. He was a lot stronger. He boxed very well.”

Banks was also thrilled with Doyle’s travelling support. “They cheered the roof off the place and, as the away fighter, you always have to work a bit harder.”

Doyle could next be in action at Hull’s Gemtec Arena on May 2, with an opponent yet to be confirmed.

Meanwhile, stablemate Danny Gell makes his professional debut against Craig Tomes at Elland Road tonight.
