The Movie Songbook was hardly the obvious vehicle for the former front person of Texas. But then again, why not?
If Sharleen Spiteri wishes to make it in the States, she could do worse than team up with the legendary Phil Ramone and recreate Hollywood at its best. Spiteri’s choice of material is spot on, kicking off with Xanadu, encompassing Bowie’s Cat People (Putting Out The Fire) and Prince’s Take Me With You from Purple Rain.
More obvious covers of The Sound of Silence, What’s New Pussycat and The Windmills Of Your Mind are also present, but well executed. So all in all not a bad exercise. But Spiteri’s Rock credentials have definitely taken a nose dive.
