It was somewhat galling to read in The Press on March 5 (South Bank residents to have say on 20 mph zones plan) the spurious claims of Green Party councillors of Fishergate Ward, when it was in fact, the efforts of Micklegate Ward’s three Labour councillors that made the present proposal possible.
For many months Julie Gunnell, Sandy Fraser and David Merrett have assiduously campaigned, held Saturday morning street stalls, collected petition signatures and presented them in full Council, and argued consistently for such a scheme.
It is unfortunate if this behaviour by the Greens serves to detract from the credit due to the ward’s own councillors, if and when the scheme wins support from the local residents in the forthcoming consultation exercise to be conducted in the streets concerned.
