YORK Indoor Bowls Club were made to pay for their defeat in January against South Leeds as they lost the Yorkshire League title to Featherstone who picked up the maximum 18 points from their defeat of Thornaby.

York were up against relegation-threatened North Cave and were made to pay for a poor start which saw them trailing 42-24 after ten ends.

They reduced the arrears to 17 shots five ends later, but couldn’t improve any further and went down 83-59 picking up only six points.

At home, David Stroughair’s rink came from 7-3 down after eight ends to lead 16-8 after 15, which proved to be enough as they only won one more end in a 17-14 success.

Paul Mooring’s team were grateful for a six they scored on the 14th end to make the score 15-12 as they held on for an 18-17 victory.

Away, Paul Humphreys’ team went from 6-4 ahead to 21-8 behind between the seventh and 17th ends and went down 24-14.

Phil Emmerson’s team dropped 19 shots over the space of nine ends to go from 6-5 to 25-5 and finished beaten by 28-8.

Cave’s 12 match points, however, were not sufficient to keep them in the first division and they join New Earswick in the second next season.

New Earswick IBC stage the Yorkshire League Challenge Cup on Saturday with York playing Thornaby and Featherstone against second division champions Redcar.
