It was nice to see everyone in York enjoying the 25th annual Jorvik Viking Festival, giving all an opportunity to dress up including the children (Going out in a blaze of glory, The Press, February 22).

Many visitors were in York from overseas, from parts of Sweden, Norway and similar areas, making the journey to attend this spectacular event.

It would be an added attraction to have Viking boating trips during the summer on the River Ouse.

The boat could also possibly have the use of the River Foss on open days organised by the New North Riding Branch of the Inland Waterways Association (IWA), which operates the city’s Castle Mills lock that can give access to the River Foss, plus the River Foss Society, guardians of that section who work in partnership with the IWA.

Burning a boat I realise is an event in itself, but in the back of my mind I visualise another use for this boat to give pleasure to many who visit our city.

It is something for those in the York Archaeological Trust connected with these festivities to think about in the future.
