A POLICE station in York could be about to reopen its doors to members of the public after seven years.

Acomb Police Station is currently looking for members of the public to volunteer to staff its front desk to visitors, as part of a trial which could see the site opened permanently.

The building in Acomb Road, which was once a fully-functioning police station with a front counter, has been used as a training centre and “drop-in” base for officers on foot patrol since 2003.

Inspector Colin Moreton, of York Police, said the idea was still in its early stages, but the staffing of the station was being looked at as an option.

He said: “If we do it it will be a limited service to begin with. It will be a trial at first.”

It was hoped volunteer front desk staff would be in place by the beginning of the coming financial year in the spring, according to Insp Moreton. Coun Sonja Crisp, who represents the Holgate ward on City of York Council, said: “We as councillors have been trying to get it to reopen as a police station since we were elected.

“It’s extremely welcome. We have constantly had communication from residents asking for it to be open because people don’t feel it’s appropriate that their calls go all the way to Fulford at the other side of the city. It leads to delays.”

She said she would welcome the reopening “with open arms”.

The police are currently advertising for volunteers around the area. A recruitment drive will be launched tomorrow, beginning with two information sessions at the station at 2pm and 6.30pm.
