YORK’S MP has met with a group aimed at improving women’s rights in Afghanistan.
Hugh Bayley met with Maryam Bibi, the founder of Khwendo Kor, a non-governmental organisation that works to improve the health, education and economic status of women and children on the Afghan border.
Mr Bayley, MP for City of York, pledged his ongoing support for Kwendo Kor’s work and to highlight their current projects. He said: “It is a real honour to once again meet with Maryam Bibi to learn more about Khwendo Kor’s work. Khwendo Kor is brave and very committed to fighting for rights for women which we take for granted in Europe.”
Ms Bibi set up Khwendo Kor in 1993 to tackle problems such as female literacy rates and low infant and maternal mortality rates.
The UK’s Department for International Development has provided Kwhendo Kor with funding to establish community schools in the Peshawar region of Pakistan, on the Afghan border.
