The residents of Acomb and Holly Bank used to have a bus service to Monks Cross via Pavement, a service which took us where we wanted to go, into the city centre to do our shopping.

A short while ago, First rerouted this service to Strensall via Exhibition Square, so we faced a long walk into the shopping centre and an even longer walk back with laden shopping bags.

We have asked First to put it back to its original route, but they decline on the grounds that the route is not economically viable.

If this is the case and services are only run where economical, can I suggest another area where savings can be made.

On a Sunday the number four service from Acomb to the university is a double-decker service, with a driver only. During the week this service is served by the ftrs, with a driver and ticket collector on board.

I presume that the service is changed on a Sunday to save having to pay Sunday wages to the extra man. Why not then do this all the time? It would save the cost of wages six days a week, it would withdraw from service a vehicle that is totally unsuitable for the streets of York, and would still carry the same number of passengers as at present.

I don’t think for one minute that this suggestion will be accepted as this would be an admission of defeat for First and Coun Galloway, who introduced this unsuitable form of transport in the “First” place.
