The final round of the Yorkshire Winter Angling League provided the biggest match of the weekend in an ice-bound north-east.

The Ouse above York was carrying two feet of snow melt but Ian Daley (Sensas Wibsey) led the way in the 74-strong field for his side to score a final round win and secure an emphatic league triumph.

Drawn below Willow Garth at Hunters Lodge, Daley was scratching for roach with double pinkie on a size 22 hook to 0.8 hook length when a bream of 6lb 3oz intervened. After a nervy battle on frail tackle, the slab slipped into the net propelling Daley to the top.

Andy Bradley (Hirst Tackle) also took the single-fish route to success at peg 245 at Linton. His feeder-fished single red maggot also found a bream and his 5lb 4oz fish was enough to see off the day’s best small fish net of 4lb 1oz.

Team-mate Andy Hampson was on peg 292 at the bottom of Linton, where an all-dace net fell to maggot feeder.

Wibsey’s impressive 51 points total put them well clear of nearest challengers Hirst Tackle, who took second place with 15. The Wibsey domination was completed by Kev Hartley who took fourth on the day to end as individual champion with 34 points.

With little other than small roach on offer, a 3lb chub set Kevin Hartley on the path to victory on a river carrying an extra two feet of water in the Leeds Midweek Open at Hunters Lodge and Linton.

Drawn ten pegs below Willow Garth, the Sensas Wibsey angler used the pole feeder to also add a handful of redfins for a final 4lb 9oz.

Maver Barnsley’s Ian Bowman led the rest of the field with 2lb 10oz of roach to 8oz taken on feeder-fished worm and maggot at peg 278 on the Linton length.

Dave Taylor got a good start to the sponsored Riverside Financial Services Series as peg 295, at the bottom of the Linton stretch, came up with the goods again.

A good field of 53 braved the elements with small roach and dace the only fish willing to feed in the icy conditions.

Using a small feeder armed with maggot and worm, Taylor took 27 roach to 7oz for 5lb 7oz to hold off a strong challenge from Eddie Bridon.

Bridon put 4lb 11oz on the scales at the whistle, using the same method at peg 49 to take 15 roach to ten ounces from mid-river.

Arthur Benstead was third with 4lb 4oz of roach.
