LOTTERY bosses have given the green light to a restoration project at an historic country house in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has been awarded £50,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to develop plans for a major restoration of Sewerby Hall.

The council will use the original archives of the Graeme family, dating from about 1900, to put together plans over the next two years.

They will then submit these plans to HLF in the hope of winning a £950,000 grant from the HLF towards the £2.6 million project. Coun Jane Evison, the council’s portfolio holder for cultural services, said: “The award of this money from the Heritage Lottery Fund is wonderful news.

“There is great enthusiasm to restore Sewerby Hall to its original glory and give visitors the opportunity to see what life was like at the hall.

“With the money from the award, we will be able to produce plans which we hope will secure funding to continue with the work that is needed.”
