CHRISTMAS cards and trees should be recycled as part of an environmentally friendly start to the new year, according to City of York Council.

Christmas cards and wrapping can be recycled through the fortnightly kerbside paper recycling collection.

Cards can be posted in any of the recycling bins at selected WH Smith, TK Maxx and Marks & Spencer stores, as part of the Woodland Trust Christmas card recycling scheme.

Trees and wreaths can also be easily disposed of, either by composting in the back garden or recycling in green garden waste bins.

Alternatively, residents can take them to any of the council’s household waste recycling Centres at Hazel Court, Towthorpe or Beckfield Lane, so the greenery can be made into a soil improver.
