MEMBERS of York Acorn Running Club are enjoying a successful winter of fell racing.

Acorn’s women triumphed in the team event at the Jolly Holly Jog in Ripon, with Becky Penty winning the individual race, while Heather Tuffs and Carol Dixon Yeung won their age categories.

The overall event was won by Phil Elliott-Dick, of Knavesmire Harriers, who was two minutes ahead of his nearest challenger.

Penty finished 12th overall and won the women’s race by about a minute.

Acorn’s Andy Normandale was ninth overall and the first over-50s man home, while Mike Hetherton was the first over-60 finisher.

Meanwhile, Acorn have made an impact in all the Cleveland winter series fell races so far.

The men won the team event at the Saltersgate Gallows race in October.

In the Guisborough Three Tops race, Acorn’s women fielded a team for first time and finished second. Matt Driscoll was the first Acorn counter in 14th place, while Steve Mummery won the over-55 age group.

Driscoll was again first Acorn counter at the Eskdale Eureka, although a navigation error cost him a top ten place as he finished 29th.

The Acorn women’s team were fourth place, led by Carol Dixon Yeung, who won the over-45 section. The Guisborough Woods race saw Steve Mummery triumph in the over-55s for the second time in the series.
