I took the advice in The Press and checked my nearest salt bin.

It is across the river over Skeldergate Bridge in Bishopsgate; the nearest one on this side of the river is outside the Mansion House.

On looking further, I discovered that Bishophill does not have a single grit bin, even though many elderly people live there. Not only that, but on checking which footpaths are gritted I found that, with the exception of Micklegate, no footpaths are gritted there either.

In fact, the only pedestrian routes that are gritted are those from car parks to the city centre. However, even these are not very sensible. For example, the route gritted from St George’s Field car park does not go under Skeldergate Bridge, as Tower Gardens are not included in the gritted area, but instead pedestrians are expected to cross the ring road straight to Tower Street. Finally, the much-vaunted Cycling City does not grit a single cycle route. I look forward to the council’s response.

Editor’s note: In a letter published in The Press yesterday, Coun Ann Reid, City of York Council’s executive member for neighbourhood services, stated that cycle routes had been “treated twice”.
