A TOTAL of 16 pairs battled it out over three rounds of eight to decide the finalists of New Earswick IBC’s George Williams drawn pairs competition.

Kath Hardcastle and Vic Wooley swept to the final with an impressive +43 but the other finalists had to be decided by a sudden-death end, with Alwyn Fletcher and 2007 winner Betty Lambert prevailing over Bob Howland and Audrey Maw, both pairings having ended on +18.

After losing the first two ends, Hardcastle and Woolley came back to lead 6-2 after four ends but Fletcher and Lambert took the next three ends to lead 9-6 going into the last end.

Hardcastle and Woolley could only manage a single to leave Fletcher and Lambert victors.

Howland and Maw were never behind in the third and fourth play-off and beat the other previously unbeaten pairing of John Hudson and Flo Mann 10-5.
