VISITORS to the Castle Museum have been serenaded with carols by a group of York youngsters.

Pupils from Carr Infant School, in Ostman Road, Acomb, were dressed in choir gowns while teachers wore traditional festive costumes at the event.

Parents and museum visitors watched the performance and head teacher Susan Bell said the children had performed “wonderfully well” in the unusual setting.

“It was excellent,” she said. “The parents that were there were thrilled and we had lots of compliments.

“Everyone looked lovely in their traditional clothing and people visiting stopped to watch and clapped the children.”

The occasion was special as it was an opportunity for the pupils to say farewell to retiring teacher Sylvia Cawker, who has served the school for 33 years.

Mrs Bell paid tribute to her retiring colleague. She said: “She’s been here a long time and she’s been invaluable.”
