WORK on a £2.9 million project to provide a modern sewerage system for a new multi-million-pound university development in York has been completed on schedule.

As about 5,000 students settle in at the University of York’s Heslington East campus, contractors have put the finishing touches to the 2.1km sewer and pumping station, which will cope with 825,000 litres of waste water every day. The Yorkshire Water project, constructed by Costain MP, began in February and will carry water to the Naburn treatment works, which were recently modernised to the tune of £12 million.

The new system will ultimately be linked to more new university buildings which are due to be built at Heslington East, as well as sports and leisure facilities.

Project manager Dominic Cunne said: “This is a significant and exciting time for York, with the new-look university bringing as many as 4,500 jobs.”

“However, although the university may prove to be the launchpad for thousands of careers, basic services such as water and sewerage systems are just as vital.”
