York Schoolboys U13s’ footballers suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of rivals Hull – a painful result for York in more ways than one.

It was obvious straight from kick-off that it would be an exciting game, with both sides pressing for an opener.

Harvey Rowson-Jeffrey, Aaron Collis and man-of- the-match Will Swords all went close for York after some impressive play from Tom Gore, Callum Hurst and Jacob Rose.

York’s defence easily thwarted the Hull attacks and debutant goalkeeper James Mackie put in a great performance.

Despite York’s dominance, it was Hull who grabbed the crucial goal.

A clumsy tackle on the edge of the box gave Hull a free-kick. The resultant shot was saved by Mackie but the quick-thinking Hull striker was first to react to the loose ball, beating defender Joe Ferguson and ’keeper Mackie before prodding the ball into the net.

York could have levelled before the break with a number of opportunities and this confidence carried over into the second half. Dominating possession, they created chance after chance.

Collis looked certain to score when through on goal but his lob went agonisingly wide.

With five minutes to go, Jack Torrance was chasing down the last man when he twisted and broke his ankle. The game was halted as an ambulance arrived to take Torrance to hospital.

All momentum was then lost and the last couple of minutes were dead.

York manager Matt Gore insisted all thoughts were not about the display but with his injured player.

“Our priority is Jack, he has now had a pot put on his leg and is recovering well,” he said.

York are next in action in the first round of the National ESFA Cup at Stockton today.
