FOLLOWING the Mercury-music nominated The Bairns, Geordie folk pioneers Rachel Unthank And The Winterset are back with a name change, extended line-up and a softer sound that echoes the new album’s title.

Led by the incomparable twin vocals of sisters Rachel and Becky Unthank, the album offers more depth and variety of songs, all arranged by the band. With the addition of multi-layered instruments, including double bass, melodeon horns and drums, to the existing piano, cello and viola, this is a more adventurous album, betraying influences as varied as The Wilson Family, their dad, George, The Keelers, Anne Briggs, Lal Waterson and Ewan McColl.

Stand-out tracks include the hauntingly beautiful Sad February, by Graeme Miles; Lucky Gilchrist, a folk rock song written by Adrian McNally; the short and sweet Where’ve Yer Bin Dick; and the gentle title track.

Simply beautiful.

• The Unthanks play at The Duchess in York on October 28, phone 01904 641413 for tickets.
