Sunday’s John Smith’s Hospitals Cup produced a close but low-scoring affair on the Ouse below York.

An excellent entry of 64 tackled a clear, cold river where small fish dominated proceedings.

Ricky Gaunt (Leeds Angling Centre) led from the top peg in the paddock at Fulford where he used pole and caster at ten metres to tempt 21 roach to 10oz.

His winning net of 6lb 6oz was enough to see off the challenge of John Cyrowski (Barlby Village Stores), who netted 5lb 5oz from peg two in the pumper on the same bank. He took an alternative approach and targeted perch on the chopped worm. Fishing at just six metres, he found fish nudging the pound.

Scott Lister (Browning Quaker) and Kev Ellerby (Acomb Tackle) were the best of the rest with 4lb 12oz and 4lb 6oz, while away from the Fulford bank Mick Potter had top weight with 4lb 6oz.

The pairs contest went to Cyrowski and Stuart Thompson (Leeds Angling Centre) with a combined 8lb 13oz.

York Veterans were in action again at Laybourne Lakes during the week where Barry Richardson had the day’s best weight, and topped the Over-70s category with an excellent 62lb 12oz from peg 48.

Leading the youngsters home in the Under-70s was Pete Webster, who netted 55lb 6oz from peg 18 to see off the challenge of Stan Haigh (Angler’s World Holidays), who finished up on peg six with 35lb 12oz in the net.

A clear and low Ouse at Nun Monkton made bites scarce in most areas for the Dave Rayner Memorial on Sunday.

It was a close match for all but Jim Jordan, who put the result beyond doubt after finding barbel at peg 60 just above the Tower. He presented caster on the bomb into 12 feet of water to take three fish to 6lb 8oz in his 15lb final net.

Leading the rest with 5lb 8oz was Steve Smith at peg 47 where caster on roach gear brought him a small barbel, plus a dozen roach.

A couple of sharp frosts pushed weights down at Langwith Lakes on Sunday but it made for a close contest for the minor places.

Well out in front with 76lb 1oz was Nick Butler, who worked with maggot to the island at Bethany’s peg three to find carp to 3lb.

Runner-up was Gary Thornton, who offered pellet across and maggot down the near margins for 58lb 10oz, carp to 3lb again being responsible.

Paul Kozyra scored a comfortable win at Oaktree Leisure on Sunday.

A peg 24 draw on Pond Four was the scene for his maggot and caster approach at ten metres, which captured carp to 4lb leading to a solid 64lb 8oz tally.

Tom Hodson was among the frontrunners again, coming second with 42lb 8oz of carp taken at peg 20, where caster and corn again brought fish to 4lb.

The York and Selby waters of the Selby Canal staged round two of the Eastern Winter League on Sunday.

The 100-peg event is the largest and probably the classiest field to tackle the canal in some years.

Maver Barnsley got into their stride and dominated but Garbolino Ossett made them work for their win and produced the winner through Mick Lodge.

While the rest contented themselves mainly with roach, Lodge slipped three tench and a few bits into the net after a day on chopped worm at peg ten on the York water.

Tony Peel led Barnsley’s charge with 11lb 6oz of squatt-caught roach taken at ten metres at peg 55 on the Selby length.
