SHE has already completed an exhausting four-day hike in the Peruvian Andes and crossed the finishing line of the Jane Tomlinson York 10km Run, but this York fundraiser still has another challenge to face.

In three days’ time, Zoe Fletcher will test her endurance to the limit when she tackles the world’s biggest half-marathon as part of her quest to raise £5,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support in one year.

The 31-year-old, who lives in Acomb Park, said she could not even jog for five minutes this time last year, but on Sunday she aims to run every step of the Great North Run, in Newcastle.

Zoe will then only have one day to recover before she hosts a Peruvian Dining Evening on Tuesday, as part of the ten-day York Food & Drink Festival, which starts tomorrow.

“I think I’m going to have to borrow a wheelchair so I can serve the food,” said Zoe, who completed her first challenge in May, when she travelled to Peru to hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, reaching altitudes of 4,200 metres.

“Everybody keeps telling me about the hills in the Great North Run and I’m petrified, but I’m determined to run it all.”

All proceeds from the Peruvian evening, which will be held at the Fountain Café, in Parliament Street, with food cooked by Michael Hjort, owner of the acclaimed Melton’s and Melton’s Too restaurants, will go to Macmillan Cancer Support.

“The reason I signed up to do all these crazy things was that my best friend’s mum was diagnosed with cancer and unfortunately died last year,” said Zoe, who works for Macmillan Cancer Support as the regional events co-ordinator.

“Her mum lived in Holland and I was quite shocked when my friend told me of all the services she had to pay for, when in England, people can get these services for free through Macmillan.

“In England, as soon as somebody gets a cancer diagnosis, Macmillan is there for them right the way through their cancer journey.”

Tickets for the Peruvian Dining Evening cost £12 and are available by phoning the festival hotline on 01904 466687. Zoe will also be hosting a coffee morning in Parliament Street on Friday, September 25, from 10am to 1pm.
