YORK’S Italian community is organising a fundraising drive to help the victims of the crippling L’Aquila earthquake.

In April, 298 people lost their lives, while as many as 70,000 people were left homeless by the force of the earthquake which devastated L’Aquila province in central Italy.

Schools, nurseries and countless homes still remain inaccessible after the earthquake which measured 6.3 on the Richter scale and from which aftershocks are still being felt in the affected region.

To aid the Italian Earthquake Appeal, the York area Italian Society has organised a buffet and disco on Saturday at the English Martyrs’ parish hall in Dalton Terrace, York.

The event starts at 7.30pm and costs £5 per ticket. For more information and details phone 07909 840607 or 01904 796452 or 01904 643206.

Tickets can be reserved by sending a stamped addressed envelope and cheque to Francesco Fiorentini, 50 Bramham Avenue, York YO26 5DE.
