SOME of America’s most prestigious travel agents have been welcomed to York as part of a new drive to put the city on the map as the number one destination for US visitors.

The group of 14 Virtuoso travel agents, representing big-name travel organisations such as Pathfinders, Luxury Travel Network and Virgin Atlantic Airways, carried out a fact- finding mission about what York has to offer its visitors. They visited tourist attractions including the Minster, Castle Museum, Jorvik Viking Centre, Barley Hall and the National Railway Museum, where they had afternoon tea on the Valiant carriage.

Gillian Cruddas, chief executive of Visit York, which organised the tour, said latest tourism figures were showing a steady recovery in visits from the United States. “The USA is the number one country for overseas visits to York, and it’s vitally important that we use opportunities such as this to showcase our fantastic city – and ultimately ensure York is promoted as a top destination by America’s travel agents.”
