The Kids, competing for the first time in the six-year-old event, beat two-time winners Corinthians Cougars 5-1 and 48-42 on aggregate in the final at Clarence Gardens.

In the pairs contests, Kids duo Bill Waldie and Bernard Drury beat Andy Brookes and skipper Dave Poynter 19-14 after being 19-9 up with three ends to play.

Dave Harrison and Betty Richardson held off a determined challenge from Cougars duo Dave Preece and Alwyn Redhead to win 13-12 having been 10-4 up just after half way.

The Cougars’ fight back in each of the pairs clashes gave them hope of snatching the title.

Their triple of Brian White, Bill Brookes and Pete Godwin went from 9-8 down after eight ends to 16-11 up with two ends to play, while scores tightened up in the pairs matches.

However, Mel Dewhirst, Doug Richardson and Bob Howland settled Milky Bar Kid nerves by retrieving five shots on the last two ends for a 16-16 threesomes tie.

The outcome in the final was in stark contrast to the qualifying group match between the sides at Nestlé, when the Cougars mauled the Kids 8-0 by the incredible margin of 64-23.

Both finalists enjoyed comfortable semi-final victories, with the Milky Bar Kids trouncing Clifton Cowboys 8-0 away from home and the Cougars beating Haxby Road Rockets 7-1 at Railway Institute.

GARY Bunce beat Michael Moss 21-8 to win the Haxby Road Bowling Club Champion of Champions singles final.

The victory assured Bunce of a place in the 2010 EBA National Champion of Champions competition.

Bunce had earlier beaten Steve Hall in the semi-finals, while Moss reached the final with a last-four success against Jim Campbell.

Meanwhile, the end of the Clarence Gardens Bowls Festival signalled the start of intensive autumn maintenance work on the three greens.

A programme of regular winter work and reboarding of the green perimeters planned by the Clarence Gardens Bowling Association is aiming to restore the venue to its former glories.
