Asbestos dust found in classroom at Poppleton Ousebank Primary School, York

SPECIALIST contractors have been called in to clean a York primary school after traces of asbestos dust were found in classrooms.

The potentially dangerous dust is believed to have been generated at Poppleton Ousebank Primary School while work was being carried out on the roof during the summer holidays.

City of York Council said today that a light covering of dust had recently been discovered in several rooms at the school.

A spokeswoman said that some of the ceilings in the affected areas were known to contain asbestos, so air-monitoring was carried out in these rooms to determine if there was a problem.

She said air test results were “satisfactory,” but some of the original dust samples did contain traces of asbestos, although others did not.

“Although all air-test results were satisfactory, as a precaution, a specialist contractor was employed to thoroughly clean all the affected areas and to remove all residual dust,” she said.

“Further air-testing and dust sampling was then carried out to ensure that the premises were suitable for reoccupation.”

She added that as far as she was aware, children had been able to return to the school on Monday.

The council confirmed the asbestos alert had taken place after The Press was told about the problem by a source.

The source claimed that asbestos dust leaked through ventilation holes in the ceilings in to classrooms as the roofers were banging and moving around on the roof.

The source added that “men in white suits” had been cleaning up the dust last Friday.

Last year, another York primary school, Wigginton, was closed down for a fortnight after asbestos was found during a structural inspection. Safety work was carried out to remove the substance from the building.

So the school and the Council aren't trying to hide this then? Children were back at the school and with even a hint of asbestos in the air of the classrooms parents should have been notified and there should be less secrecy about the news.

The fact the school has asbestos is clearly recognised by its recent obsession with bright red to signal the danger? More bright red signs (with more to come we hear) and a 6ft bright red fence to blend with the green fields.

Now we know why they were so insistent on using bright red and ignoring Poppleton residents views - it was a warning of asbestos on the loose!!!

Ah, Poppleton - the Royston Vasey of York! I salute the school for being brave enough to go against the Poppleton resident's views; few others would be so bold!! If Mrs O'Hara goes missing, I think the first place to check would be the 'special meat' section at the local co-op! I know from experience of my son attending that school that if you don't drive a volvo, wear leggings with a wax jacket and dare to do something as demeaning as a full time job, you'll never fit in!!! So what difference does it make if the school has a red fence?? And, if the school are certain that the classrooms are safe, then why should they spread panic amongst the parents?? In this day and age, with the litigation society we live in, there is no way that the school would be open if there was any risk at all to pupils.

Asbestos, how come we didn't get asked to tender? It's the Barbican demolition contract all over again. It's not what you know, it's who you know, and who you brown envelope as well!

" So whats wrong with red fences and what has red fences got to do with asbestos dust found in the school? Sounds like sour grapes and residents not getting their own way. Next it will be the children making too much noise!!!!!
