A PUB will serve heavenly pints of a York church’s specially-brewed ale during a community barbecue at the weekend.

Landlord Stuart Weston arranged for St Paul’s Ale to be created specially for the festivities at the Fox Inn in Holgate Road.

The father-of-three, who used to run the Olde Starre Inn in Stonegate, said: “We are chuffed to bits that St Paul’s are using our beer garden and facilities to host this event.

“It’s great to have something like this which is so community based. It shows that pubs are not just drinking dens, but somewhere for the community to come together.

“I’ve always believed that it’s the people who make the difference to a good pub. Hopefully a lot of families will come and join us at the event.

“There will be lots for the children to do.”

The family-friendly feast, which takes place on Sunday from 1pm, is open to everyone from the local community, and not just regular members of the church’s congregation.

Mr Weston, who recently took over the pub with his wife, Lindsey, said the event would also feature a bouncy castle, children’s games, and an adventure playground.

The Rev John Lee, vicar of St Paul’s, said: “I’m delighted that we’ve been able to team up with Stuart and Lindsey for the barbecue.

“They are a great couple who have made a real contribution in creating a positive community atmosphere in Holgate since they took over the Fox.

“Having our own St Paul’s Ale brewed for the event is just the icing on the cake.”

This is not the first time St Paul’s has tried something different in order to engage with the community.

The inside of the church was transformed into a large acoustic music venue for special charity nights called Bridge Jam.

York’s biggest rock band Shed Seven played there along with former Seahorses’ frontman Chris Helme.
