MORE than 100 York schoolchildren swapped their pens for trowels to help brighten up a riverside walk.

Pupils from Fishergate Primary School, St George’s Primary School and Steiner School escaped the classroom for an afternoon to take part in a planting session near the Millennium Bridge on the banks of the River Ouse.

The project was organised by The Friends of New Walk, with guidance from the York Natural Environment Trust and funding from the Fishergate ward committee.

“Everybody had a lot of fun and it was great to see children and parents getting involved,” said Shirley Woolhouse, chair of Friends of New Walk.

“Each child was given a wildflower plant to look after for two weeks, before coming down to New Walk to plant it.

“I was keen to get the children involved because this is their area and the more sense they have of their ownership, the more likely they are to care for it.”
