Once more Labour politicos and Lib-Dem activists play political ping pong, while York’s infrastructure falls apart (Our black holes, Letters, May 18). Quick, let’s improve matters: resurrect Nero now!

Objectively, the Lib Dems can claim major progress in education: under Coun Runciman’s intelligent stewardship, York’s educational attainment and school replacement programme is most impressive.

It is equally true that the attainment element was built on the previous Labour’s success during its protracted time in office, plus good quality, local school governance. Education is probably one of the very few areas either party can consider really positive.

Elsewhere, the current Lib-Dem administration appears an increasingly “unsafe pair of hands”. The botched Barbican and Kent Street car park redevelopment under Coun Galloway’s purported leadership is an object case of how micro-management, in the wrong hands, fails abysmally.

Next, the Hungate debacle: an upmarket shed (inevitably!) upset our self-appointed architectural and conservation led know-alls. Late in the day, English Heritage “threw a wobbly”, which induced panic in the flaky executive, nominally led by Coun Waller, but where Coun Galloway’s hand and shadow still loom too large.

Next, to add insult to injury, the opposition parties permitedt a Lib-Dem councillor to chair the scrutiny investigation into the Hungate debacle.

He then managed the investigation, which also should have questioned the competence of his own party’s leadership on the executive.

Surprise! The panel decided it was not the Lib-Dem executive or senior management who were at fault, but the blame lay squarely with the wider community. So no buck passing or abrogation of responsibility here then.

Now the Lib-Dem leadership has sacked its other successful exec member, Christian Vassie – but the flaky response from the nominal leader, Coun Waller, is that he “is taking a break”.

Perhaps that is a problem in a city where so many Kit-Kats are made!
