THREE boys have been arrested after a brick – believed to have been thrown from a motorway bridge – smashed through the windscreen of a coach carrying York City Football Club supporters and injured a fan.

It is believed the brick was dropped from the A63 bridge over the A1, which is just south of South Milford, near Selby, on to the York Pullman Bus Company coach at about 10.15pm, on Saturday, May 9.

The incident happened as the coach was returning from City’s FA Trophy final match against Stevenage Borough at Wembley earlier that day.

A 59-year-old Minstermen fan, from Dishforth, near Boroughbridge, was taken to York Hospital with a leg injury after being hit by the brick and was discharged later that day.

West Yorkshire Police have arrested two boys aged 13 and 14 on suspicion of criminal damage and assault in connection with the incident, and a 12-year-old boy on suspicion of criminal damage.

The suspects, who live near where the incident happened, have been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

York Pullman bosses praised the actions of the bus driver, commending his ability to pull the vehicle – which was carrying 22 fans – over on to the hard shoulder despite the fact he was in a state of shock.

A spokesman for the firm said then: “The driver’s behaviour was exemplary. He was very shaken up by the incident.”

The fans had to wait about 40 minutes for a replacement York Pullman coach to take them back to the city. The Pullman spokesman said this was the first time anything like that had happened to a York Pullman bus.
