THREE dancers from York will swap their tap shoes for hiking boots next month when they take part in Breast Cancer Care’s Ribbon Walk.

Brenda Martin, 62, Liz Fletcher, 58, and June Baker, 60, signed up for the ten-mile walk at Harewood House, near Leeds, as a way of supporting two friends from their dance group who have recently been treated for breast cancer.

The trio, who have danced together for 18 years, aim to raise £1,000 for Breast Cancer Care – a charity that offers help and advice to people who have been diagnosed with the condition.

June, a shop assistant, of Whenby Grove, Huntington, said: “We wanted to do this to boost morale and give our friends a bit of support.

“They have both finished their treatment now and are doing well. One of them was only diagnosed in April, but she’s already had her treatment and is even back dancing.”

Their tap dance group is called The Gals and is part of the Evelyn Whitcombe School of Dance, based in Huntington.

As part of their fundraising, Brenda, Liz and June are holding a coffee morning and table- top sale on Wednesday, May 27, from 10am to 2pm, at St Andrew’s Hall, in Huntington Road. There will be a raffle and tombola, and stalls selling cakes, plants, pink items, bric-a-brac, coffee and tea.

They would also like to hear from anybody who might be able to provide a bouncy castle and face-painting for children. If you are able to help, phone Liz on 01904 416091.

The Ribbon Walk will take place on Saturday, June 20, with participants able to choose between a 20-mile and ten-mile route.

Organisers hope to attract 1,000 walkers, with the aim of raising more than £300,000 for Breast Cancer Care.

If you would like to take part, register online at ribbonwalk.org.uk, or phone 0870 145 0101. Entry costs £30, and participants are asked to raise £250 for Breast Cancer Care.
