Newcomers Strensall – the only winners this week in division one of the Tyke Petroleum Men’s Tennis League – went second after a comprehensive 64-44 defeat of Boston Spa.
York’s match against visitors Bubwith was close with home captain Dave Linsley and partner Sam Barnard winners in the final rubber as a 7-5 advantage secured York a draw against last season’s champions.
Poppleton similarly struggled against visitors Rowntree Park before the father and son axis of Paul and Nick Turnbull, pictured, scored a fine 9-3 last-rubber win to force a draw.
Starbeck lead the division two way with maximum points from their first two matches.
Wheldrake’s Paul Gowland and Dave Parrish scored an outstanding 31 games in their team’s 78-30 demolition of struggling Knaresborough.
But their run was halted by Copmanthorpe, who saw off Wheldrake to follow on an impressive defeat of hosts Wigginton.
Captain Graeme Butcher and partner Alan Partington have scored nearly 50 games in the brace of wins.
