A MAN was stabbed in the stomach and punched in the face during an alleged attack in west York.

Detectives said the 40-year-old victim, who is from the Acomb area of the city, suffered a stab wound to his stomach and bruising to his face, and was treated at York Hospital.

The assault happened near some trees in Bachelor Hill, Acomb.

A York Police spokesman said the man was attacked by two males, but was unable to provide further details about the incident, which happened at about 1am on Monday.

He said: “A male was admitted to York Hospital at 3.25am on Monday.

“He’d received injuries to his face and a stab wound to his stomach.”

The spokesman said the man’s injuries were not life-threatening.

A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman yesterday said: “Police were notified by staff at York Hospital after a 40-year-old man was admitted during the early hours of Monday with a minor wound to his stomach.

“The man sustained his injury during an alleged assault in the Bachelor Hill area of York, as he walked towards Askham Lane.  “We would ask anyone who was in this area on Monday between midnight and 1am, or anyone who witnessed the incident, to contact York CID on 0845 60 60 247, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.” The Press reported yesterday how new figures showed crime in York had fallen for the fourth year in a row.

But an investigation by this newspaper revealed a marked divide between the north and east of the city, where crime is falling, and the south and west, where the number of offences is on the rise.
