FOR HER second album, all tracks but one are Gardot originals, exploring varied textures from the acoustic guitar/hand percussion Brazilian feel of If The Stars Were Mine, to the bluesy Who Will Comfort Me, a Dr John-tinged, New Orleans groove with horns and organ.
Baby I’m A Fool is a classy love song, cushioned in sumptuous strings and velvety production. Lover Undercover has Gardot in femme fatale, torch-song mode and she follows Madeleine Peyroux’ example by including a song, Les Etoiles, in French.
Ms P’s producer Larry Klein also borrowed for this album. Do we need another female jazz/lounge singer? Ms Gardot ticks most of the boxes, although without the easy authority of Diana Krall or the character of Peyroux.
She is an accomplished songwriter and has a soulful, pleasantly breathy voice, her occasional fast vibrato akin to Duffy’s.
