THE Redwood Park Winter Angling League turned into a family affair as 15-year-old Ryan Barker beat his dad, Dave, to the £250 prize.

In a tight and hard fought contest at the Huby fishery, Ryan, sponsored by Browning Quakers, ended up with 29 points from eight matches – exactly the same total as Dave. The winner was decided by aggregate weight, with Ryan on 116lb 12oz and Dave netting 116lb 3oz.

Ryan used waggler, pole, and feeder throughout the series, displaying the range of his ability and also the need for versatility on the venue.

The league was so tight that fishery owner Paul Chappell could have won it had he bagged an extra 9oz in the final round.

Meanwhile, Roger Holmes grabbed the limelight at Langwith Lakes on Bank Holiday Monday with a pellet attack at peg two on Kevin’s Lake.

That resulted in him taking carp to 5lb from the island to end the day with 140lb 14oz and a big winning margin.

At Bethany’s peg one, Tim Bell also topped the magic ton with 110lb 2oz made up of carp to 3lb supported by chub to 1lb, pellet tight across again being successful.

Result: 1 Roger Holmes, G Gouch, 140-14-0; 2 Tim Bell, Langwith, 110-2-0; 3 Rich Darling, Mosella Selby, 91-8-0; 4 Tony Stephenson, G Gouch, 87-6-0; 5 Simon Beswick, Tri-Cast Rochdale, 79-2-0; 6 Steve Hawkins, Eccleshill, 79-0-0.

Brilliant sunshine brought the fish up in the water at Oaktree Leisure on Sunday, but they took a lot of tempting and it resulted in a day of mixed fortunes.

Gary Pawlett made it back-to-back wins after getting involved with some serious grass carp at peg 30, where caster up in the water paid dividends. Five grassies to 18lb were well supported by carp to 5lb, roach and skimmers to the tune of 63lb 12oz.

Leading the rest with 42lb 8oz from nearby peg 28 was Ben Linley, who used corn on the deck for tench, skimmers and carp to double figures.

Result: 1 Gary Pawlett, Oak Tree Leisure, 63-12-0; 2 Ben Linley, Peggy Tub, 42-8-0; 3 Mick Sykes, Oak Tree Leisure, 30-4-0; 4 Dave Sinclair, Oak Tree Leisure, 27-12-0; 5 Colin Spencer, Tri-Cast Guisley, 25-0-0; 6 Pete Bradford, Acomb Tackle, 22-4-0.

* Stuart Wilson (JT Rogers) topped another excellent contest at Carpvale for round six of the Bob-Co Spring League.

Drawn on peg one on Cyprio Lake, he worked with pole at 17 metres. Offering meat tight to the island he tempted carp to 7lb.

Gary Watson (Bob-Co) was second on 60lb 20oz.
