IF GOSSIP is to believed, George Michael was the first choice to receive this year’s Britt’s Life Time Award.

Whatever, since the ceremony the Pet Shop Boys have been pretty ubiquitous in the music press and to their credit, Messrs Tennant & Lowe have delivered their most accessible and poptastic LP for 20 years. This certainly sits comfortably against the classics Actually and Introspective.

After the experimentation of recent outings, Yes marks a back to basics and a return to the very sound which endeared the partnership to a generation.

The likes of All Over The World, featuring a sample from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker, the Motownesque Pandemonium and the space invaded More Than A Dream will probably find themselves on the next volume of Greatest Hits. Hard-core fans will opt for the cleverly titled double set Yes etc... which includes This Used To Be The Future, featuring Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe on lead vocals and a cameo performance from Phil Oakey. A collector’s piece indeed.
