WOW. The Veils’ third record is compelling, touching and magnificent. That this band are largely a secret defies belief, but Sun Gangs is surely going to be the record which pitches them to a new level.
There’s a slow, brooding, burning intensity about Finn Andrews’ vocals which is captivating and this ten-tracker hits the right buttons from the very start – Sit Down By The Fire’s melodic, bluesy feel setting the perfect tone.
The House She Lived In, The Letter and Three Sisters are mighty tracks – soulful songs which meander along without resorting to a huge chorus and a cacophony of guitar sound.
The Veils are gloriously understated.
They let their lyrics do the talking and that catchy melody has far more impact than any wall of sound. Sun Gangs is one of the records of the year so far.
