TODAY was a very good Friday for Leslie and Irene Foers, as the York couple celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
The Foers, of Green Lane, Acomb, were married on April 10, 1944, at St Stephen’s Church, Acomb, only weeks before D-Day.
Their daughter, Beverley, said the couple could not find an 18-carat gold ring in York because of wartime shortages, and so had to go over to Leeds, where they managed to buy one.
But they were quickly parted after their wedding, with Leslie leaving to take part in the Normandy landings, shortly after D-day.
After the war, he worked at the York Carriageworks before setting up in business as a motor mechanic in Acomb.
The couple had three daughters, Janet, Lesley and Beverley, and one son, Steven, and six grandchildren – Thomas, Laura, James, Oliver, Mark and Freya, and one great-grandchild, Luke.
Irene, 83, and Leslie, 85, were celebrating today with an afternoon tea with family and friends.
