Adjacent pegs on Anya’s Lake were the scene for a dramatic head-to-head that ebbed one way then the other in a thrilling angling encounter at Langwith Lakes.

Pegs 13 and 14 ruled the roost in the 52-pegger, where a surprise overnight frost meant many endured a slow start.

Mick Sykes, of Bob-Co, on peg 13, and Gareth Watson, of Morley Match, were soon into the small carp and matched each other fish for fish throughout.

With both anglers fishing pellet tight to the island and catching similar stamp fish it was too close to call, with even the scales struggling to separate the pair.

In the final countdown Sykes got the verdict by an eight ounce margin – 62lb 6oz to 61lb 14oz.

Roger Holmes completed the top three with a pellet-caught 59lb 14oz from peg 17 on Emma’s Lake.

Result: 1 Mick Sykes, Bob-Co Bradford, 62-6-0; 2 Gareth Watson, Morley Match, 61-14-0; 3 Roger Holmes, Garbolino, 59-14-0; 4 Pip Snaith, Hull, 56-8-0; jt5 Kevin Marler, Tight Lines Shaw and Rich Cook, Acomb Tackle both 56-0-0.

Round Four of the Bob-Co Spring League at Carpvale produced another excellent result with more than half of the 40-strong sell-out field netting more than 20lb.

Steve Sharples, of Bob-Co, led the bagging from peg 36 on the Match Lake, where he offered pole and meat into open water for a 28 carp haul of 58-8-0.

Steve Mazza, of Yorkshire Baits, ran him close from the next peg, where his challenge fell one fish short of victory. Fishing pole and paste tight to the rushes, he netted a host of small carp to scale 57lb 8oz.

Andy Barker, of Bob-Co, took third from peg 27 with a level 57lb, while team-mate Stuart Wilson had top weight on Cyprio with his 55lb 8oz from peg one.

* Dave Cunningham made it look deceptively easy at peg 36 on Pond Four at Oaktree Leisure as his pellet and corn approach caught the attention of carp to six pounds.

At the whistle, he had an unchallenged 77lb 8oz in the net.

Result: 1 Dave Cunningham, Jackdaw AC, 77-8-0; 2 Alastair Wilkes, Jackdaw AC, 44-4-0; 3 James Hamer, Drop AC, 39-0-0; 4 Paul Rhodes, Plumb Bobs, 36-0-0; 5 Roger Summerscales, Oak Tree Leisure, 30-0-0; 6 John Nuttall, Oak Tree Leisure, 24-4-0.

Penny drops as Coyne returns to winning Woodlands ways

Mark Coyne bounced back to form at Woodlands.

The angler topped the 61- pegger on Partridge, Skylark, Curlew, Wagtail and Kestrel with a new record for the Carlton Minniott complex.

Drawn on Partridge 16, the Sensas Woodlands man began on pellet at six metres but, as the match progressed, the carp were boiling up in the water at 14 metres.

Fishing shallow, he plundered 52 fish between five and seven pounds for an historic bag of 244lb 15oz. The rest could only look on in admiration.

Brett Moffatt, of Woodlands Tackle, was the best of the chasing pack in Saturday’s event with a more reasonable 110lb 2oz.

It was a case of up and down the following day with Mark First, of Woodlands Tackle, taking the honours in Sunday’s 69-entry with 126lb 2oz of carp up in the water on pellet at 15 metres from Partridge 2.

* The Redwood Park fishery, near Huby, will be hosting regular Saturday and Wednesday opens, starting next Saturday.

The Saturday opens on the Arc will be from 10am until 3pm after a 9am draw. The Wednesday opens, which start on May 13, will have a 5pm draw, with fishing from 6pm to 9pm.
