LIKE father like son. Teenager Arran Thompson had an immediate impact when he made his first senior start for York RUFC – scoring a debut try and lining up alongside his dad, Darren.

The Thompson pair played for the Clifton Park club’s third team when they beat Leeds-based West Park Bramhope 36-12.

And they weren’t the only ones getting in on the generation act.

Adam Bowers, 17, came on in the second half to join his father, Ian, and brother, Russell, who are both regular team members and make a Bowers family back row.

Adam graduated through the club’s youth section and has played at York for five years and also for North Yorkshire.

Scrum-half Thompson, also 17, followed up his own box-kick to score. The founder member of the current Under-17s team started his York career as a five-year-old.

He also plays for Yorkshire and Scottish Exiles, the Scottish RFU development academy.

Thompson and Bowers were part of a foursome of U17s players to see senior action.

Charlie Nicholson, also in his 12th season at York and a North Yorkshire captain, got on the pitch along with 18-year-old Henry Bradley, who played at fly-half.

Elsewhere, Selby U15s went to Chesterfield and left their opponents battered and bewildered from a 67-0 defeat.

Josh Cruise and Lindon Wedgewood scored early. Jay Robinson got two and Tom Kimpson, along with another Cruise try, gave the Sandhill Laners a 38-0 half-time advantage.

Cruise picked up his first try, Jack O’Hara drove over for his first of the season, Kimpson added a further two tries and George Lintott rounded off the try fest.

In their next game, Selby showed their class in a 26-5 win at West Park Leeds. Josh Cruise scored two tries and kicked three conversions, while Tom Kimpson and Adam Wass also crossed.

Malton Lions shared the spoils in two matches at Sandal. In the first game, they went down 4-0 but, in the second match against Sandal ‘B’, the Lions were ready to fly out of the blocks.

Harry Butler, impressive at prop, set up tries for Owen Hayhurst and Henry Hudson, but Sandal struck back with a try before Charlie Corner powered over.

Sandal scored two more tries either side of a touch down by Malton’s William Fordy.
