Joint-men of the match Harry Bromwich and Josh Potter ran riot in the first half as York Acorn ARLC Under-13s enjoyed a 32-30 win at Shaw Cross.

Bromwich ran onto the ball to cut through for the opening try, then Potter scored a brilliant try, after good work from Bromwich, sprinting 65 metres.

Potter scored his second and, although Shaw Cross replied, strong running from Ashley Robson and Lewis Lord put the hosts on the back foot and created a chance for Potter to complete his hat-trick. Liam Lowson added all four Acorn goals.

Shaw Cross brought the scores back to 24-16 and made the most of the wind in the second half to bag another converted try.

But Acorn centre James Dunhill showed great speed and skill to score and Bromwich got his second try, and these were crucial as the hosts scored twice more only to miss both kicks.

New Earswick All Blacks U11s lost 22-6 at home to Dudley Hill in their first game since Christmas, though the coaches and players were pleased with the performance.

All Blacks opened the scoring after George Leatt’s kick and strong New Earswick defence resulted in Dudley Hill being pinned behind their own line. On the repeat set, George Wallace crashed over to score, Luke Adamson converting.

Leatt kicked well and controlled the game with half-back partner Will Ireland, who also defended brilliantly.

Jamie Law made good yards and some clever off-loads, and other good displays came from Adamson at full-back, Nick Surtees and Tom Wilson, who worked hard in defence.

Debutant Tom Atkins was man of the match after some powerful drives as York Acorn U10s played an entertaining and physical game against Milford.

Top tackler Reece Maynard (2) and Jack Wyard scored tries, while Alex Ledgeway caught the eye at stand-off.

Harvey Hyde had a strong game while Edward Nelson was most improved.

Half-backs Sam Young and Shay North were men of the match as Heworth U9s produced a scintillating comeback to draw at Castleford Panthers. There have been three games between the teams this season, each claiming a narrow victory and now two share-alls.

Andrew Errington’s inside pass found the impressive Josh Rogerson, who sprinted 60 yards for Heworth’s opener but the Panthers scored four tries and would have had a fifth but for Rogerson’s tackle.

Max Carry gave the Villagers hope as he powered over from close range but his side conceded twice more after half-time and were 22 points adrift, before their recovery took place.

McBride touched down North’s grubber, then North went over himself from acting-half after great forward play. Young burst through with a fine sidestep and Rogerson was put through by McBride moments later to tie the game.

A great run from Cain North set up his brother to score his second try to complete 28 unanswered points, but the Panthers crashed over at the death and converted for a deserved draw.

Arron McBride was solid in defence along with Young, North and most improved player Jamie Harvey, who also impressed with the ball.

A conversion hitting a crossbar was all that separated New Earswick U9s and Oulton Raiders.

It was end-to-end stuff and a fine advertisement for junior rugby, with New Earswick’s tries coming from man-of-the-match Isaac Wilson and Harvey Baynes, who was unlucky to see another try decision go against him. The most improved player was Callan Bowes, but such was Earswick’s all-round effort that the whole team received the opposition coaches’ man-of-the-match award.

Jordan Hyde and Kian Oliver scored tries but it was not enough for New Earswick U8s against a strong Hunslet Parkside team. The opposition coaches’ man of the match was George Starkey.
