A HEADED brace from York City top scorer Richard Brodie secured a vital 2-0 win against struggling Weymouth, who despite their troubles displayed a tremendous battling performance.

York had gained nationwide popularity due to the generosity shown by the club and fans, who gave opposition supporters financial backing for transport and entrance to the ground. This charitable contribution has been praised on all forms of media – even receiving an honorary mention on Sky Sports.

Within the first minute, a chance arose for City with a Brodie shot from 20 yards. but it was easily stopped by ’keeper Evans. After a quarter of an hour, Daniel McBreen fired a fierce shot towards the bottom corner, but a tremendous save kept it out.

However, it was a tactical change by City boss Martin Foyle that resulted in the deadlock being broken after 23 minutes. Simon Russell, having switched wings, cut inside his defender to deliver an inch-perfect cross for Brodie to head home.

Weymouth’s chances were restricted to long-range efforts, but Brodie’s onslaught on the opposition goal continued, forcing a good save out of Evans on the half hour.

In the second half, York ’keeper Josh Mimms was called into action when an ambitious volley was dipping into the top corner.

After quick thinking by Mimms, substitute Onome Sodje was quick to react to a long kick but took too long to get his shot away.

Obviously unaware that the Terras fielded a completely different 11 to their last game, some York fans were growing impatient after several squandered chances.

Towards the end of the 90 minutes, the result was secured when Brodie grabbed his second of the match by nodding in Rusk’s cross.

The result was a welcome three points for the Minstermen, who move four places above the drop zone.

The two sides meet again on Thursday and it will be York who go into the fixture the most confident despite a below-par performance.
