Regarding the article headed “Chain of office” (The Press, March 17) and Graham Titchener taking up his new post as manager for Cycling City York.

There have been several articles written over the last few weeks about the £3.68million pounds granted by the Government to promote cycling in the city. Mr Titchener states that he intends provision of cycling training in schools and workplaces.

I am becoming increasingly frustrated by the lack of reference to the existence of one of the best teams of cycling instructors in the country. They already teach cycling at schools in York and this training is available to members of the public. The training has been carried out in York for more than 13 years and this group of instructors have trained hundreds of children. They are part of York Road Safety Department and have visited many towns and cities throughout the country teaching groups of people in those cities how to become cycling instructors. Do City of York Council, Cycling City York and The Press have any knowledge of this excellent team of instructors? It would appear from the lack of reference to this great group of people that they have no understanding of what goes on in their own city. It would be nice to see the cycling team’s achievements given the recognition it deserves.

Alan Smith (retired cycling instructor), The Willows, Acaster Malbis, York.

• A City of York Council spokeswoman said: “We share Mr Smith’s praise for the quality of the current cycling training in our schools, and can fully reassure him that this team will play an important part in the exciting opportunities brought through Cycling City status.”
