The secret of the York campus growth disclosed in The Press (York’s best-kept secret, March 17) with comments of approval is, of course, encouraging, especially in these difficult times, with the additional employment generated during the next few years.

There are probably projects in hand with other universities, entailing great expense.

The future of students of all ages intending to use these fabulous facilities may not be as bright. Lurking on the horizon there is a proposal for most universities to dramatically increase the tuition fees.

This system already burdens many of those leaving this phase of their education, with debts which take many years to repay, and even discouraging some from embarking on a university education.

Larger fees will naturally make the situation more difficult and daunting. What a shame some of the millions of pounds spent on the buildings could not also include the students tuition fees.

The worst case scenario might well be in the future there are universities of ultimate quality, with many vacant spaces due to cash-strapped students unable to risk or afford to take advantage.
