RESIDENTS and motorists in a York village have won their battle to see local roads improved.

Councillors have agreed to carry out repairs to three roads in Strensall, following a petition from Strensall and Towthorpe Parish Council.

West End, Southfields Road and The Village will all be resurfaced.

Local councillor Madeleine Kirk said: “I am glad to see that when we highlight roads that are genuinely in need of attention, action is taken to repair them.

“I am sure that the investment in improving the condition of our roads will be welcomed by local residents.”

City of York Council’s neighbourhood services panel discussed the roads on Wednesday night, but two of the three roads had already been earmarked for work, under the city council’s wider resurfacing programme.

Coun Ann Reid, the council’s executive member for neighbourhood services, said: “The condition of the city’s highways is a very important issue for people.”

The panel also considered a petition from Holgate residents, calling for repairs to be carried out to streets in Acomb and Holgate. Council officials said regular inspections were already carried out, and rejected the option of doing a new survey of all roads in the area.

At the same meeting, the panel received an update on fines and prosecutions by the council in the final three months of 2008.

Six people were fined £50 each for smoking in their vehicle or business premises; three people were fined and one cautioned for breaching noise abatement notices; and five cautions were issued over food safety or hygiene breaches.

As previously reported in The Press, there were also a number of trading standards prosecutions, including of market trader Mohammed Amir Ismail, who received a confiscation order for £273,015 over counterfeit clothing.
