York Indoor Bowls Club dramatically won the Yorkshire Ladies League after going top for the first time this season.

Requiring six points to make certain of the title, they collected nine against Hornsea to win the league for the seventh year running.

York’s opponents needed an aggregate win to lift them out of the relegation zone. And after ten ends they led 39-37, but five ends later York led 61-50 before powering to an 82-72 triumph.

At home, Maureen Thomas’s rink were level at 13-13 with five ends to play. But victory in four confirmed a 20-14 win.

Sue Kirkpatrick’s team trailed 12-11 with eight ends left. Again they held their nerve to win 20-17.

Away, Carol Instone’s team picked up a four on the eighth end to lead for the first time at 9-6 and never lost the advantage as they won 21-19.

Sue Tomlinson’s side surged 5-0 up after three ends but then trailed 17-11 and 21-17 before taking the last three ends for a 21-21 draw.

New Earswick were thankful to Redcar for gaining a solitary point from their game against Scarborough, which gave Earswick the second division crown.
