WHY all of a sudden has York become a roadworks nightmare? Everywhere I seem to travel either the road is being dug up or the path is been altered, causing massive delays.

Surely those in charge know that we have a very bad traffic problem as it is.

So having to deal with these roadworks, etc, just increases the problem by 100 per cent.

Despite the fact we have to tackle this problem, Clifton Green was blocked off due to a burst water main. Now, of course this can’t be foreseen, but how long does it take to repair? It’s a water main, not a space shuttle.

Four times in two days I drove past and saw the so-called “workmen”

standing around idle and most likely discussing last night’s football results – so no wonder it wasn’t sorted straight away.

• I READ recently in The Press about Bishopthorpe road and part of Scarcroft Road being closed due to resurfacing work.

I drive a school bus that takes pupils to All Saints School (upper and lower sites) and also Millthorpe School, so this is massive disruption to my school run, never mind all the other school buses and parents dropping their children off.

So a question: why could these roadworks not start on April 4 (they are due to finish on this date), as the schools will be on two weeks holiday, or is this too easy, as schools holiday dates were set over 12 months ago, well before the road works date?

A spokesperson for City of York Council said: “We could not defer the scheme to April 4 because this would coincide with the Easter break, and therefore would cause massive problems for traffic flows around the city due to the influx of visitors and increased traffic levels. It is for this reason that road closures on classified routes are reduced to an absolute minimum during holiday periods.
