Heworth’s Neil Wood is now only one win short of Ken Taylor’s record of nine victories after beating club colleague Steve Burdett three frames to one in the York Conservative Clubs’ Tayrol Scruton Cup final.
Burdett made the first mistake in a bout of safety play and Wood took advantage to make a 41 break. Burdett replied with a 28 break but again left an easy red for Wood, who later added a 31 break. Burdett cleared to black but Wood took the frame 77-48.
In the second frame Burdett scored seven points from an early opening before going in-off playing safe.
When playing safe, Wood got a fluke snooker. Although Burdett escaped, Wood was able to clear to black to win 74-31.
Burdett made an early 32 break in the third frame after Wood’s poor safety shot and fluked the black to lead 40-0. Wood fought back with a 35 break, but as the frame advanced Burdett took all the colours finishing with a pink to win the frame 75-53.
Trailing 36-12, Burdett fought back to 42-29 but a run of snookers from Wood earned 11 points and the green.
Burdett went in-off the brown, which Wood then potted and Burdett conceded with the score 60-29.
