HEWORTH ARLC Under-13s stormed into the semi-finals of the Yorkshire Juniors Continuation Cup with a 38-8 triumph over Oulton Vikings at Elmpark Way.

The game had been been postponed twice due to the wintry weather, and the Villagers were champing at the bit ahead of the quarter-final clash.

Heworth began strongly as Dave Larkin once again showed his strength and pace to shrug off a host of defenders to score under the posts. Larkin then smashed his conversion off the crossbar and over for a 6-0 lead.

Heworth applied further pressure as captain Richard Ashton sucked in the Vikings defenders near the line before popping the ball to wingman Lewis Hartley, who increased the Villagers’ lead to 10-0. Oulton fought back with a well worked try, while new Heworth recruit Kenny Penrose broke from halfway only to be ankle tapped five yards short of the line.

With the half-back pairing of Tommy Heilds and Jack Rowson moving the ball wide, the Villagers were soon again on the Vikings’ line. Rowson popped out a pass to prop Harry Fogg on the blind side and he crashed over the line. Larkin converted to make it 16-4 at half-time.

Oulton scored in the corner early in the second half, but it was then all Heworth.

The versatile Danny Simpson, playing at full-back, showed a clean pair of heels as he swerved around the defence for a try.

As the Vikings tired, the hosts piled on the pressure with Larkin scoring his second try and hooker Arron Raftree taking the ball and accelerating past a stunned defence. Hammerton converted both scores.

Man of the match Hartley bagged his second try to seal the win.

Top tackler was scrum-half Hields, while the coaches’ top player was Penrose.
