DERBY honours went to league leaders Heworth ARLC Under-14s as they held off the challenge of York Acorn to win 10-8.

The game remained in the balance right up to the final whistle of a game of superb defence, with the forwards matching each other stride for stride.

Heworth’s top try scorer Jordan Potter posed a danger every time he had the ball in hand, but it was man of the match Flannan Naismith who powered over the line to open the scoring. Harry Deighton converted to give Heworth a 6-0 interval lead.

In the second half, hooker Deighton forced his way over to stretch the lead to 10-0.

Acorn stand-off Jack Anderson broke a tackle to score under the posts and was awarded a penalty after he was fouled in the act of scoring. Both goals were kicked, but Heworth managed to hang on.
